Who should participate?

Educators in all capacities, parents, psychologists, private practitioners. professors, advocates, school staff, judges, human resources professionals, curriculum developers, SLPs, OTs, and anyone interested in understanding what it might feel like to have dyslexia.

What is Dyslexia for a Day?

Dyslexia for a Day is a hands-on simulation experience designed to help participants understand and empathize with the challenges that individuals with dyslexia face when reading, writing, spelling and processing language. Each simulation includes a conversation that includes a discussion about dyslexia myths, accommodations, interventions for students with dyslexia.

What materials are needed?

All of the required materials are provided in the starter kit. Make sure participants are prepared to have something to write with and write on. If you are hosting a virtual simulation, make sure participants have access to their cameras for full participation.

How long does the simulation last?

The simulation typically lasts between 60 to 90 minutes, including debriefing and discussion time. However, you can choose to implement fewer simulations to fit most time frames.

What will I experience during the simulation?

Participants will engage in activities that often cause individuals with dyslexia stress in the classroom. This can include tasks involving reading, writing, spelling listening, and comprehension under modified conditions.

Will this simulation show me exactly what it’s like to have dyslexia?

While no simulation can perfectly replicate the lived experience of dyslexia, Dyslexia for a Day offers insight into the frustration, anxiety, and effort involved in everyday academic tasks for someone with dyslexia.

How big can the group be?

This simulation can be done with any size group. For groups larger than 30 it is advisable to have at least two facilitators.

Can Dyslexia for a Day be done virtually?

Yes, there are specific instruction in the manual for virtual simulations.

Is the simulation appropriate for children or students?

The simulation is primarily designed for adults or older teens (e.g., high school students) who are learning about dyslexia to support others. It is not recommended for young children, especially those with learning differences, as it may be confusing or discouraging.

Is training or facilitation required?

No, although training is not required, the facilitator should take the time to read the manual prior to facilitating the simulation and they should watch the video. Facilitators are encouraged to send any questions they have to: dyslexiaspecc@gmail.com

DTI will be providing free virtual Facilitator trainings available to those who purchase a kit, beginning in the Fall of 2025.

Will this simulation teach me how to support someone with dyslexia?

It’s a starting point. The simulation builds empathy and awareness, but additional training is recommended to effectively support and teach individuals with dyslexia.
